Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable
|
|
Treasure house of strange pieces of information, jotted down and collected over many years by Dr E. Cobham Brewer (1810–97) and first published in 1870. Revised and added to many times since then, it retains the original flavour of hours spent in a Victorian study – with lists, for example, of 'famous horses in myth and history' or of 'renowned misers'.
