Buddhists

A small proportion of Britain's *ethnic and religious minorities are Buddhists, mainly from Sri Lanka, Burma and China. There are also Indian Buddhists, immigrants to Britain from 'untouchable' communities which converted to Buddhism in India in 1948 to escape their status at the bottom of the Hindu caste system. In addition to these there is a flourishing group of European converts to Buddhism, part of a widespread interest since the 1960s in eastern religions. In the past two decades several monasteries have been established in Britain, following Tibetan, Thai or Japanese Zen Buddhist traditions. Estimates of the number of Buddhists in Britain range from 25,000 to 50,000.
