Brownies
|
|
The junior section of the *Guides. Established in 1914, they were first called Rosebuds. The name Brownie was adopted in 1918, deriving from a book of 1870 by Juliana Ewing in which two children behave like brownies (elf-like creatures with the admirable habit of finishing the humans' housework at night). Mrs Ewing's book also provided the name Brown Owl, for the adult leader of the pack, and the elfin mythology led to each Brownie's obligation to attempt a good deed every day.
