(Aberhonddu in Welsh, 8000 in 1991) Town in Powys which became in 1923 the cathedral town of the new diocese of Swansea and Brecon. The cathedral is 13–14C, with the Early English chancel its most impressive feature. This was unfinished, with a flat timber roof, until George Gilbert Scott completed it in 1862–5 with the appropriate stone vaulting. The Grecian-style Shire Hall (completed 1842, by Thomas Henry Wyatt and David Brandon) houses the Brecknock Museum, which has an extensive display of local history.
