Brooks's
|
|
(London SW1) A *club founded in Pall Mall in 1764, taking its name from its first manager, William Brooks. It moved in 1778 into premises in St James's Street, recently completed and designed by Henry *Holland. The late 18C was the club's most fashionable period. Its members were rich and dissolute (Charles James *Fox was their leader, giving the club a strong Whig association), and gambling was the favourite pastime; the stakes were high.
