Brooklands
|
|
The world's first custom-built motor-racing circuit, which opened near Weybridge in Surrey in 1907. It was designed as an oval course with heavily banked curves. It was also of great use to the British motor industry for the testing of cars, since a 32kph/20mph speed limit prevailed on the roads. In Brooklands' first year a record was established by Selwyn Edge for the distance travelled in 24 hours (2546km/1582m, at an average speed of 106kph/66mph, a figure unequalled for another 18 years). Racing continued at Brooklands until 1939, but the track was not restored after being used for aeroplane manufacture during World War II.
