Raja Brooke

(James Brooke, 1803–68, KCB 1848) Soldier who founded a dynasty of English rajas in *Sarawak. After leaving the army and inheriting a fortune, he sailed east in 1838 with the intention of establishing a settlement in Borneo. He found the raja of Sarawak facing a rebellion, helped him put it down, and was himself then appointed raja with the right to name his successors.
