(8000 in 1991) Town in Wiltshire known in particular for the tiny chapel on its bridge, which was used as the local prison cell from the 17C; and for the Saxon church, originally founded by St Aldhelm in about 700 and rediscovered in the 19C after being used as a school. Just south of the town is the superb Barton Farm Tithe Barn, a stone structure of the 14C with a roof supported by great arches of oak.
