(1728–1809) Entrepreneur best known for his part in the development of the *steam engine, but also a leading manufacturer of decorative objects in metal. Son of a maker of buckles, he built in 1762 a new factory at Soho, just north of Birmingham, which was soon famous for its production of high-quality items in silver, Sheffield plate and ormolu. In 1775 he went into partnership with James *Watt, taking charge of the production and marketing of Watt's inventions. By the time Boulton retired in 1800, more than 500 Boulton and Watt steam engines had been installed round the country and abroad.
