(1889–1983, kt 1937) Conductor who first made his reputation performing the great English composers of his youth, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Holst. Two great orchestras had the benefit of his skills in their formative years: the *City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1924–30) and the *BBC Symphony Orchestra (1931–50). He was subsequently principal conductor of the *London Philharmonic (1951–7).
