Boudicca
|
|
(d. c.AD 60) Queen of the Iceni tribe whose violent rebellion in AD 60 against the *Romans has given her the status of the first British heroine. Her husband, Prasutagus, had cooperated with the Romans but on his death they seized his kingdom in what is now Norfolk. His widow led her tribesmen in a trail of destruction of Roman settlements, reaching as far south as London. After her eventual defeat she is believed to have taken poison. Until recent years she has been more commonly known by the Latin version of her name, Boadicea.
