(c.673–754) Missionary who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to the pagan Germanic tribes and who is often known as the Apostle of Germany. Born in Devon and christened Wynfrith, he joined a monastery at the age of seven and remained a monk in England until he was over 40. He then began his great missionary journeys, which led to his being consecrated bishop in 722 and establishing his see at Mainz. He founded churches and monasteries throughout Germany, usually bringing monks and nuns from England. At the age of about 80 he was still carrying the faith to new territories; he was murdered by pagans at Dokkum, in the Netherlands. His feast day is June 5.
