(1873–1953) Labour politician, the first woman to be chairman of the *TUC (1923) and a member of the cabinet (minister of labour, 1929–31). She began her political career in the National Union of Shop Assistants, and first made an impression with a rousing speech when she was the only woman delegate to the TUC in 1899.
