Ceramic signs set into the façades of buildings in London where distinguished people have lived, giving the relevant dates and details. The first was placed by the LCC in 1901 on the house in which Macaulay died; there are by now nearly 400 blue plaques. From 1867 the Royal Society of Arts had been attaching memorial tablets to buildings on a similar basis, starting with the house where Byron was born.
