(150,000 in 1991) Seaside town and conference centre on the west coast, in Lancashire. Since the arrival of the railway in the mid-19C it has been the favourite holiday resort for the industrial towns of the northwest, famous for its illuminations, for its three *seaside piers, for its long sandy beach with 11km/7m of promenades (the single most visited attraction in the British Isles) and above all for the Blackpool Tower (built 1891–4, 158m/520ft high, in imitation of the Eiffel Tower in Paris). The town is calculated to accommodate some 8 million visitors each year in about 5000 hotels and boarding houses.
