Blackheath
|
|
(London SE3) Hilltop common near Greenwich which has historically been a gathering place for large groups approaching London from the southeast. It was here that Wat *Tyler concentrated his forces, and here that John *Ball is believed to have preached to them before they entered the city during the Peasants' Revolt; Jack *Cade's followers camped on Blackheath a century later. The flat terrain has also given the area significance in sporting history. *Golf was played on the heath in the early 17C; here, in the mid-19C, *hockey was first established as an organized game; and Blackheath was one of the first rugby football clubs, founded in 1858.
