(106,000 in 1991) Town in Lancashire which has long been an important weaving centre, for wool in the Middle Ages and for cotton since the 18C. The Lewis Textile Museum demonstrates the development of the spinning and weaving industries. St Mary's church (1818–31 in the Gothic Revival style, architect John Palmer) acquired the status of a cathedral when Blackburn became a diocese in 1927; it has since been gradually enlarged. The Museum and Art Gallery, founded in 1862, has a collection of 19C British paintings and watercolours together with good holdings in unexpected fields, such as illuminated manuscripts and Japanese prints, which are the result of individual bequests.
