(1951) Opera with an all-male cast by *Britten, with libretto by E.M. *Forster and Eric Crozier (b. 1914) based on the novel by Herman Melville. Billy, enthusiastic and naive, is press-ganged into the navy in 1797 (during the *French Revolutionary Wars), and is hanged from the yardarm after unintentionally killing an officer who falsely accuses him of encouraging mutiny.
