Thomas Bewick

|
(1753–1828) Engraver working in Newcastle-upon-Tyne who almost single-handedly established the craft of wood-engraving and at the same time revealed its artistic potential. His genius lay in the depiction of nature and of country scenes on a tiny scale, as seen in the illustrations of his two great works, A General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and History of British Birds (2 vols, 1797–1804). The family cottage in which he was born at Cherryburn, 18km/11m west of Newcastle, is kept as a museum.
