(23,500 in 1991) Ancient market town (the name of its main square is Saturday Market); administrative centre of Humberside. It is notable for two superb Gothic churches, St Mary's (14–15C) and Beverley Minster. On the site of a church first established in the 7C, the present *minster was begun c.1230 and took about a century to build. It is noted in particular for the twin towers of its west front, for its long nave with a double set of transepts, and for the Percy tomb with its elaborately carved canopy. Dating from the mid-14C, this is one of the greatest examples of English stone-carving.
