Belvoir Castle
|
|
(29km/18m SE of Nottingham) Gothic Revival mansion of the early 19C, home of the dukes of Rutland, on the site of a Norman castle which dated back to the late 11C. The name, deriving from Norman French, means 'beautiful view'. James *Wyatt was the original architect of the present house, but his designs were much modified. There is an excellent collection of paintings, including five of a set of seven sacraments by Poussin. The kennels of the Belvoir, one of the oldest hunts in the *Shires, are at the castle.
