(London SW1) Area to the west of Buckingham Palace which was developed from the 1820s by Thomas *Cubitt in conjunction with the Grosvenor family (later dukes of Westminster), who owned the land. The word derives from the most imposing of the squares, Belgrave Square, itself named from a village just north of Leicester, where the Grosvenors had an estate.
