Two members of the family, William (1740–1819) and his sister Mary (1749–1797), working in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, achieved exquisite results in the decorative enamelling of glass. They painted mainly in white enamel on goblets and decanters, producing delicate rococo designs of birds, fruit or landscape, though sometimes they used a range of colours for armorial decoration. Their brother Ralph (1743–1817), a silversmith, had *Bewick as an apprentice.
