Max Beerbohm
|
|
(1872–1956, kt 1939) Caricaturist and writer, half-brother of the actor Beerbohm Tree (1853–1917). His gently humorous caricatures, mainly of literary and artistic figures, are in a highly individual style with rounded lines and soft tones. Famous in his own time as a parodist, essayist and wit, his literary reputation now rests mainly on his satirical romance Zuleika Dobson (1911), in which the beautiful heroine turns her thoughts to Cambridge after every single undergraduate in Oxford has committed suicide for love of her.
