(8km/5m NE of Menai Bridge) Town on *Anglesey which has grown up round the castle built for Edward I. Set in completely flat land, the castle relied for its defence on two great concentric walls and a moat filled by the tide from the Menai Strait. Work began in 1295 and within three years the fortifications were complete, thanks to 400 masons and 2000 labourers.
