Beamish North of England Open-Air Museum

(13km/8m NW of Durham) Extensive recreation of everyday working life in about 1900. Cottages, shops, a farm, colliery buildings and a railway station have been brought from neighbouring areas and rebuilt here in 81ha/200ac of countryside. People in period costume work trams and steam engines and farm machinery, and take visitors through the tunnels of a drift mine at the colliery. Beamish was voted European Museum of the Year in 1987.
