(1795–1860, kt 1852) Architect of distinction in several styles, from the Gothic of St Peter's church (1823–6) in Brighton, through the Grecian classicism of the Royal Institution of Fine Arts (1824–35) in Manchester, to the Italian Renaissance manner of the *Travellers' and *Reform clubs in London. But by far his greatest achievement involved a return to the Gothic style, in the *Houses of Parliament.
