Barra
|
|
The most southerly of the main islands of the Outer *Hebrides. Its only town, Castlebay, takes its name from the castle of Kisimul (first recorded in the 15C but claimed to date in part from the 11C) which stands on a rock in the bay. Barra is unusual in having a predominantly Roman Catholic population, and it has acquired a late-20C fame as the location of the events narrated by Compton Mackenzie (himself buried on the island) in Whisky Galore.
