Barnardo's
|
|
(Ilford, Essex) Charity founded by Dr Thomas Barnardo (1845–1905), a Protestant missionary who established a home for destitute children in the East End of London in 1870. There were eventually more than 90 'Dr Barnardo's Homes', which astonishingly managed to maintain their stated principle – 'no destitute child ever refused admission'. Today the homes as such are not needed, but the charity does extensive work caring for disadvantaged children in the community, whether through foster parents or specialist day centres.
