Bamburgh
|
|
(80km/50m N of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) Imposing castle on an isolated crag on the coast of Northumberland. An *Anglo-Saxon fortress here was captured with great difficulty by *William II in the late 11C. Of the Norman castle which then rose in its place, only the much restored walls and keep remain. The rest of the present building, dating from 1894–1903, is a rich example of Victorian medievalism. The village of Bamburgh achieved fame in 1838 as the birthplace of Grace *Darling.
