(80km/50m SW of Aberdeen) House in the *Scottish baronial style (and therefore called a castle), built 1853–6 for Queen *Victoria and Prince *Albert on the bank of the river Dee. The architect was William Smith of Aberdeen. The royal family has used Balmoral ever since as a holiday home, worshipping on Sundays in the local church of Crathie.
