Any narrative poem which is handed down in an oral tradition, usually in short rhyming verses of a kind suitable for singing. An interest in collecting and preserving them developed in the 18C, the first major group being published in Percy's Reliques (Thomas Percy Reliques of Ancient Poetry 1765).
