(d. 1381) Radical English priest who was excommunicated and often imprisoned for advocating a classless society. He became one of the leaders of the *Peasants' Revolt and was reported to have preached to the rebels, taking as his text the popular verse: When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then a gentleman? After the collapse of the uprising he was captured and hanged.
