Robert Bakewell
|
|
(1725–95) Agriculturalist and pioneer of stock breeding. By new techniques, such as inbreeding, he greatly improved the local strain of both *sheep and *cattle in his native Leicestershire. His family inheritance of 178ha/440ac became much visited as a model farm, where his animals and his innovations in crop methods and irrigation could be inspected. He was also the first to establish a profitable stud, hiring out his rams and bulls for large sums.
