Lord Baden-Powell
|
|
(Robert Baden-Powell, 1857–1941, kt 1909, baron 1929) Soldier and founder of the *Scouts. He became a national hero in 1900 for his 217-day defence of *Mafeking (1899–1900), thus acquiring an unexpectedly wide readership for his manual of military scouting techniques (Aids to Scouting 1899), which was published during the siege. The resulting public interest caused him to set up an experimental scouting camp for boys in 1907, on Brownsea Island in Poole harbour, Dorset. Its success led to the publication of Scouting for Boys (1908) and to the establishment in that year of the Scout movement.
