Roger Bacon
|
|
(c.1220–c.1292) Philosopher and scientist who combined a medieval measure of credulity on such topics as astrology and alchemy with a clear-eyed interest in astronomy and optics. He is seen as partly prefiguring the methods of modern science. Educated at Oxford and Paris, and from about 1257 a *Franciscan friar, he spent his last years arguing for improved scientific education and attempting an encyclopedia of scientific knowledge.
