Term applied now to English literature of the early 18C, the time of *Pope and *Swift, but used in their day less appropriately to describe the preceding *Restoration period. The implication is of a flowering of classically correct literature, for *Virgil, *Horace and *Ovid were writing in the reign of the emperor *Augustus (27BC to AD14).
