Field Marshal Auchinleck
|
|
(Claude Auchinleck, 1884–1981, GCB 1945) World War II commander in the Middle East (from 1941), popularly known as the Auk. By the time of the first victory at El *Alamein he had also taken personal command of the 8th Army, but his approach was too cautious for Churchill. In the late summer of 1942 the 8th Army was given to *Montgomery and the broader Middle East command to *Alexander. Auchinleck spent the rest of the war as commander-in-chief in India (1943–7).
