Art Deco

The dominant international style between the wars, which had developed gradually from about 1905. The term became current only in the 1960s; it was derived from the first big international exhibition of design after World War I, held in Paris in 1925, L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts). The emphasis was on straight lines, firm curves and bright colours, suitable for mass production, in deliberate contrast to the more sinuous subtleties of *Art Nouveau. The best-known British designer in the style is Clarice *Cliff.
