Matthew Arnold
|
|
(1822–88) Poet and critic, son of the Rugby headmaster, Thomas Arnold. His professional career was as an inspector of schools. Poetry was a main concern in the first half of his life (The Scholar-Gipsy 1853, Dover Beach 1867), but he turned later to wide-ranging works of prose criticism. The most influential of these has been Culture and Anarchy (1869), a collection of essays analysing the cultural and educational needs of a healthy society.
