(Amateur Athletic Association, known as the three As) Body established in 1880 to organize amateur athletics in England and Wales, with all amateur clubs eligible for association; it finally merged in 1991 with the Women's Amateur Athletic Association, formed in 1922 when the AAA committee refused to allow women's clubs to affiliate. The late 19C was a time when many such athletic organizations were coming into being.

The Northern Counties Athletic Association, formed in 1879 to represent clubs in the north of England, claims to be the oldest governing body for athletics in the world; Midland Counties followed in 1880, and Scotland in 1883. The first Amateur Athletic Championships were held in 1886, and the English Cross Country Championships in 1887. The AAA Championships have remained the main national annual athletics meeting. British involvement in international athletics is the responsibility of the *British Athletic Federation.
