Arbroath
|
|
(24,000 in 1991) Fishing port and resort in the Tayside region of Scotland. The abbey was founded in 1178 by William the Lion, king of Scotland, and was dedicated to Thomas *Becket, martyred just 8 years previously and already canonized. The Declaration of Arbroath was made here by a Scottish parliament in 1320 and was sent to the pope, informing him that *Robert the Bruce was king of an independent Scotland. The main feature of the red sandstone ruins of the abbey church is a circular window, still intact, known as the 'round O of Abroath'.
