Anglo-Saxons
|
|
A group comprising all the Germanic tribes (mainly the *Angles, *Saxons and *Jutes) which moved into and controlled England between the departure of the Romans in the 5C and the arrival of the Normans in the 11C. The term was first used in pre-Norman times to distinguish the Saxons in England from those remaining on the Continent, but it has since been applied generally to the inhabitants of England in the centuries before the Norman *Conquest.
