Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
|
|
A narrative, surviving in seven different manuscripts, which is the main source of English history for the centuries leading up to the Norman Conquest. It was first compiled in the late 9C from earlier documents, including the work of *Bede. Unlike Bede's history it is in English rather than Latin, as a result of the campaign by *Alfred the Great to promote vernacular literature. The various manuscripts of the chronicle were continued sporadically after Alfred's reign, one having an entry as late as 1154.
