And when did you last see your father?

(1878, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) One of the most famous of English narrative paintings, though few can remember the artist (William Frederick Yeames, 1835–1918). The poignancy of this *English Civil War scene derives from the tiny figure of the *Cavalier boy – dead centre, and the picture's brightest patch of colour in his blue Van *Dyck suit. He stands on a stool to face the almost kindly Roundhead officer asking the dangerous question in the painting's title, while his mother and sisters stand terrified in the background. The picture was for many years recreated as a life-size tableau in *Madame Tussaud's.
