Alfred Jewel
|
|
(Ashmolean Museum) Small golden object of the 9C with the words Aelfred mec heht gewyrcan (Alfred had me made) running round the edge and an enamel image of a man in the centre. It ends in a socket which perhaps once held a pointer for following one's place in a manuscript, and the inscription makes it probable that it was made for *Alfred the Great. It was found in 1693 in Somerset.
