(Harold Alexander, 1891–1969, KCB 1942, earl 1952) Commander of the rearguard at *Dunkirk, of the army in Burma during the British retreat in 1942, and of the forces in the Middle East at the great turning point of World War II from the victory at El *Alamein to the German surrender at Tunis in May 1943. He remained in command of the Allied forces for the invasion of Sicily and the drive up through Italy in 1943–4. After the war he was governor general of Canada (1946–52) and minister of defence (1952–4).
