Aldermaston
|
|
(16km/10m SW of Reading) Village in Berkshire where the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment was set up after World War II (it is known now as the Atomic Weapons Establishment). It was at Aldermaston, in the mid-50s, that research was carried out for Britain's H-bomb under William Penney (1909–91). The place became the subject of much public attention after the first bomb was tested in 1957, particularly in the annual Aldermaston marches organized by *CND from 1958.
