Aldeburgh
|
|
(2500 in 1991) Resort on the east coast of England, in Suffolk. It is best known for its annual music festival, founded by Benjamin *Britten in 1948 and held each June. The major performances are now given 6.5km/4m away at Snape in an old industrial building, the Maltings, which was converted in 1967 into a superb concert hall (on the first night of the 1969 festival the Maltings burnt down, but it was rebuilt in time for the 1970 season). Aldeburgh itself is The Borough in the title of Crabbe's poem, from which Britten derived his story for *Peter Grimes.
