Wayland Smith
|
|
Anglo-Saxon version of the blacksmith with magical powers who appears in many Nordic legends. He became particularly associated with a Stone Age burial chamber, known as Wayland's Smithy, not far from the *Uffington White Horse. The legend, used by Walter Scott in Kenilworth, was that if a traveller left his horse outside the cave with a coin, and refrained from watching, his horse would be magically shod.
